Movement Based Voice & Speech
Less is more! Styrkan i rösten kommer från att integrera rörelse, andning och röst i en holistisk praktik.

Movement Based Voice & Speech provides tools to find, develop and strengthen your natural voice and use it to communicate successfully whether onstage, on the screen, on the microphone or in any everyday situation in need of a healthy voice and body. The work is based on a simple progressive principle: a body that can move freely with a healthy alignment leads to freeing up the breath which supports a free and empowered voice that produces sound without tension and fear. Less is more! The power comes from integrating movement, breath and mental focus into a holistic practice.
The core of the voice work is based on Patsy Rodenburgs world-renowned method (taught at National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Guildhall School of Music & Drama and RADA) combined with elements of movement training and breathing exercises from British acting training (Natural Movement, Alexander technique), Asian theatre traditions (I am especially indebted to Yoshi Oïda, long time ensemble leader of Peter Brook’s CICT for some very effective practices), martial arts and yoga.
A Movement Based Voice & Speech class takes its starting point in addressing the body and mind as a whole, looking at releasing tension, finding healthy alignment and building the specific strength that frees the breath and voice. It proceeds to work with the breath in a dynamic range of exercises that reflect our use of breathing in every conceivable life situation. The breath automatically reflects what our bodies need in any situation, be it running, laughing, crying, yawning or sighing. And at the same time, we are able to consciously control our breath to improve our performance and feel reinvigorated and relaxed as a bonus. The work dedicated to the voice starts by finding the body’s natural resonators in order to make the sound project beyond our bodies to fill the space that surrounds us, and proceeds to exercise the specific muscles that we need for clear speech without straining and pushing ourselves needlessly. At the end of the class we are warmed up and ready to make big sounds and any kind of speech with confidence, be it a heartwarming Hello! or a Shakespeare-monologue!
Exploring language and dramatic text. A natural progression from the Movement Based Voice & Speech class is to go on exploring your relationship to language. Simple exercises help you understand your need for, and choice of words in all the different situations life throws at you. Reflecting on your own relationship to language makes it easier to understand the dramatic text that someone else (perhaps a great writer) has written. This is the first step to make the written text your own, so that you are able to speak it with confidence, passion and clarity. Richard Asker developed Movement Based Voice & Speech as a method based on four decades worth of practice and studying voice work in traditions from all over the world, ranging from Opera to Shakespeare to Nô-theatre. The work on breathing technique has been influenced by similar practices for health, sports and martial arts, borrowing elements from acupuncture, qi gong, free diving and yoga. It has been a quest to compile the most effective techniques that will work with you to find your own naturally empowered voice and speech. He has taught actors, singers, dancers and executives all over the world. In Sweden he has worked as a coach for Cullberg, Confidencen, Folkteatern Gävle, Royal Swedish Ballet School, Stockholm University of the Arts and Yrkesträningen för sångare, to name a few.
